COSCO International’s Volunteer Team Visit the Elderly Living Alone With Rice Dumplings as Gift to Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival

2016年05月30日

On 28th May 2016, COSCO International arranged a total of 22 volunteers comprising its employees and their family members in Hong Kong to join a visit activity, organised by a non-profit social organization namely the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (“NAAC”). A total of 31 elderly living alone in a public housing estate in Shek Kip Mei in Kowloon were successfully visited.

In the morning of that day, COSCO International’s volunteer team wearing neat uniform were briefed by the social worker of NAAC and divided into groups to visit the elderly who live alone in Chak On Estate in Shek Kip Mei. They carried some festive rice dumplings, fruits and necessities to give their greetings. The elderly living alone are mostly aged from 70 to 80. They worked hard for the past decades and returned to a simple retired life. They welcomed the volunteers and were happy to share their retired livelihood and their needs. The volunteers said they learnt a lot after a chat with the elderly. This was the fifth consecutive year that COSCO International’s volunteer team participated in this activity, which reflected that all levels of the Company showed their kindness and caring for the community.

The organiser of this visit activity before Dragon Boat Festival, Sham Shui Po District Elderly Community Centre (“the Centre”) of NAAC, is a communal service centre offering diversified services to the elderly. In the past five years, COSCO International collaborated with the Centre and sent a team of volunteers during the festive seasons and the winter to visit the elderly. Until now, a total of 924 volunteer hours were serviced and a number of 240 elderly who live alone and who live together benefited. In future, COSCO International will continue to encourage its employees to participate in various forms of volunteer service, so as to disseminate the message of caring for the community among its employees and their family members.
