On 19th May 2013, COSCO Kansai Paint & Chemicals Co., Ltd. (“COSCO Kansai”), a subsidiary of COSCO International engaging in the production and sale of container coatings and industrial anti-corrosion coatings, received Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority’s notification that COSCO Kansai, with the highest score, won the coatings procurement contract of the section TL02 for the main bridge project of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (“HZMB”), which is the largest coatings project of HZMB with the contract amount of RMB111.8 million. By winning this project, COSCO Kansai has officially become the major coatings producer and supplier for HZMB. This also demonstrates that COSCO Kansai’s product quality, operational performance, technical strength and project management skills have gained wide recognition in the market.

HZMB, across the waters of Ling-ding Sea at the Pearl River Estuary, is a mega-size and world-class sea crossing passageway of national strategic significance, linking the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province and Macao Special Administrative Region. With the length of 49,968 meters and the total project cost of over RMB100 billion, the HZMB is the historical longest sea-crossing bridge construction project with the largest investment amount and the highest level of construction standard and degree of difficulty in China. The coated steel-box girder of the project needs a total of 3.85 million liters (equivalent to approximately 4,744 tonnes) of coating, in which 55% or 2.11 million liters (equivalent to approximately 2,600 tonnes) will be supplied by COSCO Kansai.

The HZMB is designed to use for 120 years, which is currently the world’s longest design life for bridges, and so the requirements for protection of coating are very stringent. The contract of the section TL02 won by COSCO Kansai is the largest project of all biddings in terms of project area, which amounts to approximately 3.15 million square meters. In the coming three years, COSCO Kansai will supply anti-corrosion coatings on steel structure for the section won in the bidding, participate in the quality control and provide technical support during the process of construction.
